“Let me tell you a story…”
laura jo alexander
I never thought in a million years that I would be a filmmaker. Growing up, I was a day-dreamer of every profession, but not once did I think ‘hey this camera looks pretty cool, lets turn it on and see what happens.’
It wasn't until my sophomore year of college when I fully dove into filmmaking. I was previously studying broadcast journalism and everyone I met always asked me, “So you want to be a reporter?” And every time I said, “No, I want to be behind the camera, not in front of it.” After many interactions of that question and answer, I finally decided that I owed it to myself to see what being fully behind the camera was all about.
I switched my major that year and I never looked back. I graduated with a film production degree from Minnesota State University Moorhead in 2019 and during my time fell in love with storytelling through cinematography and editing.
In the beginning of my filmmaking journey, I was terrified to touch the camera. I didn’t want to make a mistake. Now, there’s no other place I’d rather be.
There’s something quite special about filmmaking that I believe most people overlook. Whether you’re creating a short film, interview, social media post or videos for a client, you have the ability, the power, to evoke emotion, create perspective and give the viewer something to lose themselves in. You have the ability to create change.
With anything I’m apart of creating, I want to be able to share a story and share it with great emotion. Crying, laughing, confusion, frustration, what ever it maybe, I want the viewer to be immersed in the story and feel as if they are the main character.
My journey is still fresh, but I’m excited for the challenges and triumphs ahead and I’m curious to see what those will inspire to create.
